[00:00:00] Speaker A: You're listening to the Message podcast of High Ridge Church, Longview, where our vision is to help you know God, find freedom, discover purpose, and ultimately make a difference. We are so glad that you're here, and we pray that this message impacts your life as you apply the spiritual truths from God's word in practical ways. Let's listen in. [00:00:20] Speaker B: Thank you so much. Good to be with you. Good morning to you. I told him, too. I said. I told him last week, I said, you're not going to be able to speak on Sunday. That's just not going to happen. I have a daughter myself. She's not been married yet, but I can promise you the Sunday after I marry her off, number one, I will take a deep breath and count all the dollars I've saved. Right. But I won't be preaching. So I'm honored to be here. Good to be with you. I'm from Colorado. I've been married to my wife Pam for 35 years. Yeah, big deal. Pretty big deal. She's watching, I think, right now, so. Hi, Pam. My daughter lives in Baton Rouge. She works on the campus of lsu. Just took that job down there. So I went down this week to check on her, make sure she's doing okay. Ate some Cajun food. That's pretty good stuff. That's good stuff. By the way. It's a heart attack in a bowl. Just think about Cajun food, is that. I was born and raised in Louisiana. Not far from here, probably an hour and a half from here, is where my hometown, Logansport, is where I grew up on the other side of the Sabine River. So we always thought that we were a suburb of East Texas because north Louisiana is kind of like East Texas, but not. Right. South Louisiana. Right. So we always thought East Texas was our friends. You know, we're more like East Texans. So I have a son who's about to move back to Japan. He's a 26 year old learning the language. He's really close to being fluent Japanese speaker. So he's going back over there for his final semester of language school. So we'll have a kid in Baton Rouge and a kid in Tokyo. So if you think you're an empty duster. Right. We're pretty excited about that. So, anyway, good to be with you. I want you to turn in your Bible to 1st Samuel 17. I want you to know also how much I love and admire Tim and Tina. You guys have really good pastoral leadership. Y'all know that, right? Y'all have really good pastoral leadership. Let me tell you Why? I always look at how they behave in private and public, and they're the same in public as they are in private. They're just really good. And by the way, good people are hard to find. And you have a couple that's leading your church here with integrity, with character, with sincerity. And I know you know that, but I'm glad to be a part of that with you. 1st Samuel 17 is a story of a young teenage boy that found courage at a much needed time in the story of Israel. You know the story of David and Goliath, right? I don't know how many of you have been watching that series on Prime Video. The House of David is really pretty good. I'm a little suspicious of Christian movies because they try so hard and they ended up being really bad. Have you seen those? But this one's actually really good storytelling. So I'm in. I think I'm caught up to date and I think I'll watch another episode tonight when I get home. So I preached this message before the series came out and one of the producers of the show contacted me and said, hey, I don't know you, but I found your sermon on YouTube and have you heard about this new series that's coming out? I had not heard. So he said, hey, when you get a chance, I wanna talk to you about your insights on David because we're gonna do some more filming. And so I thought that was pretty good. So I thought that message maybe was better than I thought it was when I shared it. So I wanted to preach it again. 1st Samuel 17. And we're living, I believe, in a season in human history where we need courageous people. Courage is in short supply. Fear is rampant, anxiety is at an all time high. But where's the courageous people? And we need more, right? Not less. And this is a story of a courageous person. So let's start off now if you don't know this story. The Philistines have come into the land of Israel and they've encamped on one side of the valley. On the other side, the armies of Israel have encamped. And it's kind of a standoff. So there's every day this giant of a man named Goliath would come down and taunt the battles of the armies of Israel and challenge them to a one on one fight. Winner take all is what he was doing. So listen to this. As Goliath stood, verse 8 stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and give him, make him come down to me. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects. But if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us. So then the Philistines said, this day I defy the ranks of Israel. Give me a man and let us fight each other. And listen to this. On hearing the Philistines words, Saul and the Israelites were all dismayed and they were terrified. Now we don't know exactly how big Goliath was. Some scholars believe he was between 7 foot and 9 foot tall. Big guy would probably, you know, be in the league today. I mean he's a big guy. But they, but he was intimidating, he was a skilled soldier, he was trained for battle and he was bigger than anyone on the battlefield. So he had an advantage in every way. And he had done something there had fear and anxiety had crept into the army. There was a noticeable trembling on the side of Israel in spite of the fact that that for decades, anytime the Philistines had come into the land of Israel, Israel had defeated them time and time again. The Philistines had come in to plunder, to pillage, and every single time God had used, had removed them from the land, except for this time. So then David's dad sent him to the front lines to take his brothers. A charcuterie board, basically cheese and bread, said, your brothers are hungry, your mom's prepared this, take this to the battle line. So David shows up with cheese and bread and food and supplies for his brothers on the battle. And he recognizes fear has gripped the army. And listen to what David, the 16 year old, he had a different perspective about what was happening. Verse 32 David said to Saul, he says, let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine. Your servant will go and fight him. And Saul says, I can imagine after getting off the ground, laughing, he says, you're not able to go out against a Philistine and fight him. You're a boy, you're 16 years old, you barely can have your driver's license, you can't rent a car yet you're only a boy. And he has been fighting man, a fighting man from his youth. Let's pray over this because I really believe this is an important message today because I believe some of you are stuck. I think some of you have seen something, heard something, imagined something that has caused you to be afraid, anxiety, you're stuck, you're frozen. And the Lord wants to use this message today, to give you courage back. So let's pray. Father in heaven, we pray today that you would use this message, that you would use this story, that these scriptures would come alive. I pray you would challenge us and change us, convict us. But, Lord, let us not leave here unaffected and unchanged. And we give you permission to do that. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, if you're okay with that, would you say amen? So fear had come. There was anxiety, there was worry. They were paralyzed. They didn't know what to do. And so when I read this story, I just wanted. There's a few things I want you to remember today when you find yourself face to face with bad news. Now, in this past service, he's not here in this service, but the past service. My very best friend for 20 plus years is facing cancer right now. So he was sitting in here this morning and I preached this message to him because he just got news that paralyzed him. You know, when you get a cancer diagnosis, he's a relatively young man. He's got a lot of life left ahead of him. And he got a really bad report. And for the last seven or eight months, he's been going through radiation treatments. He's been going through all kinds of. And some of them very painful. And so I'm in the fight with him. I'm aware of what this feels like. You're going through your life, everything's going well, and suddenly you get news. You're confronted with something that can make you afraid. And in those moments, here's a few things I want you to remember. Number one, remember the stories of yesterday. Now. We just sang this song. Who was and is and is to come. The problem is right now is. Is right. Right now is right now. Yesterday was yesterday. But right now, I'm in a fight. The battles of yesterday seem like, you know, small, but today's battle is enormous. Brady. Actually, yesterday's battle seemed pretty big at the time, too, if you remember. And here you are today, though. Somebody say, I'm here today, though, right? Yesterday it seemed kind of bad, but you're actually here today for a reason, because you made it. You overcame yesterday to face today. So we tend to remember, though, our failures, right? We tend to remember the failures and not our successes. But we all have a testimony. I want you to remember what a testimony is. A testimony is proof. It's evidence. It's authentication that it's proof. And it's evidence and authentication that God is able to. He was Able. He is able. He will be able. And your story is proof of that. Listen, I woke up this morning, I was telling my friend, driving over here, I said if there was ever a morning to sleep in, I mean, come on, you woke up this morning, it was a little thunder, a little pitter patter rain outside. You had a long Saturday, you could have stayed home. But you're not. You're here in church. And the reason you're here is because somebody in your past, somebody shared the gospel with your relatives or friends. They took the courage to share good news with your family or friends. And then your family and friends had the courage to share good news with you. Right? You're here because of a series of events that God orchestrated to redeem you, to capture you, to restore you, to save you. And you're here today because of why. You, because of your testimony. You have a story to share. And the enemy. Listen. Goliath had captured the most powerful thing possible. He had captured their minds and thoughts. They had imagined that they could not beat Goliath after all of their successes. And I want you to think about the story of Israel. They were slaves in Egypt and they got sent free, set free from 10 plagues. Then they came to the Red Sea and guess what? It split in half. And they walked across on dry ground. They wandered through the desert and ate frosted flakes and quail for 40 years that God provided. And then they get to Jericho, a walled city that had walls so thick that they raced chariots across the top of it. And you know what God told them to do? March around it six times. But on the seventh day, march around it seven times and then blow a trumpet and the whole thing's gonna fall apart. That's what happened. And yet here they get to another battle and they had forgotten the faithfulness of God for all those years. Suddenly they're paralyzed. They're gripped with fear. You know why? Because their leader was gripped with fear. Saul had lost his courage, and so the army had lost their courage. Goliath had captured the most powerful thing. Now David shows up with the food for his brothers. He did not. He was not afraid. Listen to what he says here. I love this. So David, the 16 year old, and by the way to all the college and high schools, something's in the room. Can I tell you that we actually need you more than you think. We need you right now. What I love about young people is they still think superhero is a job that they can have in the future. And we actually need that from you, we need your idealistic, we need your zeal. We need your idealistic heart. We need you to tell us everything's possible. Because when you get old, you get cynical. We have too many scars and we tend to look at life a little more cynically. But you're not, you're bright eyed. And we need the zeal and the fervor of youth right now. And this 16 year old is about to save the country. Listen to what he says. David said to Saul, your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. And when a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it. Now, let's just stop here for a moment because I live in Colorado where we actually have bears. And every expert I've ever talked to says this is a bad idea. So let him have the sheep. You can buy more sheep. Can't buy more you. Okay? So if you come to my state, which happens every year, the most people, this is not to make fun of you, but the number one state that gets people lost on trails in Colorado, there's not even a close second are Texans. Because you are independent, you don't read signs. You don't need signs, you don't need guides. The whole world belongs to you. We're paying rent, right? So you just wander off. It's kind of embarrassing, okay? Every time the park service gets called out to go rescue a lost hiker, invariably somebody from Cleburne, Texas or wherever, it's always Texas after the name. And Pam and I shake our heads like those independent Texans and they get eaten by bears. They disappear for years. They're all from Texas, all right? So don't chase after bears. But David went after it. I went after it. And he says, I struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. And when it turned on me, I seized it. By the way, they are apex predators. They're not accustomed to having food taken out of their mouth. They're going to turn on you. They're going to do this, okay? This is exactly what happens. But when it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, I struck it. He's like 13 or 14 when he's telling this story, okay? And killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear. Now, if half of that story is true, that's an amazing story. Okay? I'm not here to cast doubt on David's truth. I am saying he's an amazing storyteller, though. Okay? Now this next part I can absolutely say is absolutely true. Verse 34, he says, I killed both the lion of the bear and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them because he has defied the armies of the living God, the Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of the Philistines. Listen, this is exactly what you just did. This is the essence of worship. We worship who he is and what he has done. In fact, you pay attention to all the songs you sing in this church. I would say 90% of the songs you sing in the church are about who God is and what he has done, not who you wish him to be. It's who he is and what he has done that is the worship. And listen, Revelation 12, verse 11 tells us how powerful this is. It says, after they've defeated him, because what of what God has done? The blood of the lamb, something that has already happened and because of their testimony. You're talking about God, the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimony. Your story, your testimony is the key to you overcoming your fear. So if you're wrestling with anxiety, and we know this from every study, that anxiety is at an all time high in our culture, especially among college and 20 somethings. I was on the campus of LSU this week and they have a petting zoo for college students. So they come and pet the cows. So that just helps their anxiety. While I was walking by and these college kids were petting cows, I went, that's what I did growing up. And they said, it's amazing how this is helping college kids. They sign up, you stand in line and you get your 15 minutes to pet the cow, like rub their head and go back to class. That's how much anxiety is right now. All across our campuses these things are happening, but our testimony is key. Remember your story. Here's the second thing. Remember to be yourself. Remember how God made you in the womb of your mother. Know who you are, know who you're not. This is one of the benefits of getting older, is I'm okay with who I am and I'm okay with who I'm not. And until you wrestle that to the ground, you're gonna. Your life is not fun until you figure that out. I am this, I'll never be that, and I'm okay. In fact, I realize I will never be the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. I just will never. I just never will. So last year when they didn't draft me, I gave up. Had a little ceremony at the house I'll never be the Cowboys quarterback, but I'm okay. I'm a good dad, pretty good husband, and, you know, so I'm okay with that. So this is. Listen to this story. So this is exactly what Saul tries to do to David in a key moment in his life. Listen to this. It says, then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. And David fastened on his sword over the tunic. And he tried walking around. He was just out. It was uncomfortable because he was not used to them. That's not who he was. He had been anointed the king, but he was not the king. It's not who he was. And so many people are walking around in Saul's armor trying to do their work in someone else's shadow, right? Trying to be someone else, but accomplish your mission. You can only accomplish your mission if you are who you are. Your mission requires your authenticity. Being okay with this. He says, I'm not used to this. I can't use them. And he took them off. And then he put on who he was. He said, now I do know what I can do with a sling. I've never used a sword in battle, but I'm pretty good slingshot. So he took off his staff. He took his staff in his hand. He chose five smooth stones from the stream. He put them in the pouch of his shepherd's bag. And with his sling in his hand, he approached the Philistine. Listen, Envy is the sin of comparison. It's okay with who you are. God created me this way, with these skills, with this unique mindset. I am who I am. God made me. I love this. Listen, go in the strength that God has given you and do the work that God's called you to do, and you'll be just fine. Okay? So be okay with. Remember to be yourself. Here's the last thing, okay? And it's the most important one. Remember, it's really God's fight at the end. You have strength. You have wisdom. You need courage. But at the end of the day, it's the Lord who will come through for you. It's God's fight. And David knew that. David knew this. He understood this. And he. So go to verse 45. Listen to what he says. Now, at this point, David has walked out. He's facing this giant of a human being with a slingshot. Basically, this guy's got a big spear, a big shield. He is armed for battle. He's been in many battles. This is the first Time David's ever faced another human being in conflict. And there he is. And listen to what comes out of his mouth. Courage comes out of his mouth. Listen to this. David said to the Philistine, you come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty. Now stop here just for a moment. How many times during the day do you find yourself praying in the name of Jesus? In the name of Jesus. I pray for my daughter, my son, in the name of Jesus. I pray over my marriage today and the name of Jesus. Listen, you know why you can call on the name of Jesus? Because you belong to him. You know him, he knows you. There's this thing about name dropping, right when you. That's rude. It's immature and rude to name drop. Why is it immature and rude? Because you don't know them and they don't know you, but you're invoking their name. But it's powerful to use the name of Jesus. Why? Because he knows you and you know him. That's not using the Lord's name in vain. That's using the Lord's name in strength. And David realized this. David was on the backside of the desert. He was singing worship songs to the Lord. He was in constant interaction with the spirit of God. So he says, I know God, and I know that God knows me. He says, so in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied this day. The Lord will hand you over to me. I'm gonna strike you down, cut off your head. And he gets better. Okay, now he's really feeling some courage. All right. He says, today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army. In other words, I'm gonna kill you. And all you behind you, all of you that came with him, you're in trouble. I'm not advocating violence here. I'm just saying listen to what he said. He said, the beast of the earth and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. And all those gathered here will know that it is not by sword, our strength. In other words, not by man's ingenuity. It's not by my wisdom, he says, but it is the Lord who saves. For the battle is the Lord's. Would you say that out loud with me? The battle is the Lord's. At the end of the day, when you've done all that you know to do, you've prayed, you have fasted, you have kept your heart clean at the end of the day. It's the Lord who will come through for you, he says, and he will give all of you into our hands. This is some serious Old Testament trash talking. If you thought the Bible was boring, if you think your favorite athlete can try, this is the best trash talking in all the Bible. And this is. Listen, what I'm about to tell you right now is the one thing. If I ever get invited back, this is the one thing I want you to say to me. This is what I want you to remember about this message, what I'm about to tell you right now. Okay? So if you're a note taker, write this down. We're either fighting battles that are not ours to fight, because not every battle requires you to be in it. Not everything you're hearing on social media is your fight. Just know what is your fight, know what's not, and you'll live longer, number one. And. And you'll be a better human being. You'll be nicer to be around. If every battle is yours, you're just gonna be intolerable to be around. Right? And a lot of people are carrying all this unnecessary. I just know there are things I can't do anything about that. It's not my fight. And when God calls me into that fight, I'll be ready. But I'm not called to be in every battle that's not humanly possible. So we're either fighting battles that are not ours to fight, or we're fighting battles that God would like to fight for you and with you. So when you find yourself in a battle, here's two questions to ask. Am I supposed to be fighting this battle? And it's okay to say, I don't think I am. This is not mine. I'm happy to pray, I'm happy to support, but not mine. Not because of lack of courage. Sometimes what we need is wisdom. Wisdom doesn't mean I don't lack courage. People always say, pastor Brady, when are you gonna find the courage to speak out? It's actually wisdom for me not to know when to speak out and when not to speak out has nothing to do with courage. It's wisdom that rules the day, right? So I'm in a battle right now, trying to fight it in my own strength. And, Lord, I need your help. Would you come in front of me and behind me, above me and below me? Would you take over this? Because I've done all I know to do, and I wish I'd invited you in earlier, but here I am. So, Lord, I give you permission to fight on my behalf? Listen, this is really good life wisdom coaching here. For you to know that difference, that's the difference between being wise and unwise, is knowing the answer to those two questions. All right, so I'm gonna tell you a story. When I came to New Life, I came in on the heels of a massive national scandal. Church was a mess. 100 days into my tenure there, we had a gunman come on our campus, kill two teenage girls inside my church. It was a mess, okay? Google it. It's a mess. I won't go into all the details, but about a year into my time there, I was exhausted, I was tired. I thought maybe Pam and I were called to be a hostage pastor there, you know, give a once great church an honorable death. Honestly, I didn't have a lot of hope and a lot of faith. And I was discouraged and I was paralyzed by the whole thing. And I'm in my office and I had said to myself, I wish I had planted that church in McKinney, because that's what I was. I was headed to go plant a church in McKinney when the Lord redirected me to new life in Colorado, had a team put together, had the whole thing planned, and the Lord changed my direction. So I'm sitting in my office complaining, thinking bad words. And honestly, I know that shocked you, but I just did not have a great attitude about the whole thing. And I'm saying to myself, I want to quit. This is too hard, too difficult. And my phone rings, and a friend who I know and trust said, hey, Brady, I was praying for you this morning. Do you wanna quit? I'm like, yeah. Have you not been paying attention to what's going on up here? This is awful. This stinks. And I said a worse word than that, but for this context, this stinks. This is bad. I don't like this. He said to me, he gave me a word. It changed my life, and I'm gonna share it with you today. He said, brady, you think that if you had gone to McKinney that you'd get out of having to kill Goliath. But you're either going to kill Goliath in Colorado or you're going to kill Goliath in McKinney. But you're going to have to kill Goliath at some point or you're going to run in fear for the rest of your life. See, this is the choice the nation of Israel had. If you don't kill Goliath, you're going to have to Go hide in the caves for the next 30 years. And what was keeping them in the cave? Fear. So whatever fear that you have that paralyzes you, you have to make a fundamental choice. I'm either going to confront that at some point in my life or. Or every time I get close to it, I'm gonna run and hide. For me, it was a fear of failure. I had a fear of not being successful there because I grew up very poor. I'd made an inner vow that was not healthy, that I would never fail. I'm not gonna fail. I'm gonna go. I'm gonna succeed. It was an unhealthy ambition, a drive inside of me, and I had to stare down. I'd say, father in heaven, if I fail, I fail. But I will not be ruled by fear another single day. In the name of Jesus. Fear will not be my master. I'm not going to be afraid. So whatever it is in your life that causes you to be paralyzed, listen, it's probably bigger. It's not as big as you've imagined. And your God is much more powerful than you think. Have you ever turned on the light, looked under the bed? There's no monster under there. You thought there was, but then you turn on the light, you go, man, there's nothing under there. And that's what fear does to you. It makes you imagine something that's not really that big a deal. And it makes you discount your source of help, makes you minimize the very powerful that's there to help you. And David goes, what in the world is going on here? Y'all know how many times we have walked out and defeated the Philistines? Give me this and listen to what he says. Listen to what he says in verse 48, as the Philistines moved closer to attack him. There's your chance right now. What are you gonna do? Listen, Goliath was real. It was a real big man wanting to hurt David. So I'm not minimizing the thing that's making you afraid, okay? I'm not minimizing. My friend was sitting right there. His cancer is real. So I'm not minimizing it. I'm just saying at some point, you have to run toward it or you're going to allow it to control you for the rest of your life. And he says as he moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. This is the response that we have to have as Christ followers turn and run toward it. All right? I don't know if you Know this, but the American bison is one of the few animals that instinctively when a snowstorm. If you go to Yellowstone during the winter and a blizzard's coming into the Yellowstone, that squall line is coming typically from the north into the Yellowstone, they will turn and face the storm and start slowly walking toward the storm. Over time they have learned that running away from the storm keeps the storm on top of them longer. Think about that. You're running with the storm, so the storm's on top of you until it loses its strength. But if you have the courage to turn and walk into the storm, the shortness, their survival instinct says a short confrontation will help us survive longer than a long term avoidance. A short confrontation will help you survive walking. In fact, if you look at the way their head and their fur is designed, they can put their head down and walk into the storm. And within a matter of hours, they're in sunshine while the rest of the animals are running with the storm. Listen, this is important for some of you. Some of you need to turn, walk into it, go face this thing and do not run from this thing a day longer. Amen. I'll leave you this. One quote from Billy Graham that I love says, courageous is contagious. And you know what happened with David. When David struck Goliath, the whole army of Israel realized, we can do this. And they rallied. They got their courage back. Why? Because one person got their courage back. Everyone around them got their courage back. Listen, I just came here today to tell you courageous is contagious. And we just need a few of us to turn around and walk into the storm. Amen. All right, stand up with me this morning. Let me pray for you. I hope that was encouraging to you. Appreciate you letting me be here. I want to pray over you this morning. And please hear me one more time. I believe that what you're facing is real. It's a real thing. But I think you may have made it bigger than it needs to be. And maybe the enemy has convinced you that God doesn't care. God's not concerned about you, or God's not able, or God's not interested. And none of that is true. God is capable. God is certainly interested. God's waiting for you to ask him. So maybe now is the time. Say, father in heaven, I've been fighting a battle on my own and I need your help. Or maybe Father in heaven, I'm fighting a battle that's really not mine to fight. So I release that to you. Lord, help me to know the difference. Give me the wisdom today to know the difference. So I want to pray over you, Father in heaven. I pray over my dear brothers and sisters because I know in this room, many of them are in the fight of their life. They really are facing challenges and they're wrestling and Lord, they feel their strength. They're losing their strength. And I pray today by the power of the Holy Spirit, that you would overwhelm them, that you would fill them, you would strengthen them, that you would bless them, that you would nurture them and care for them. And I pray today that they would turn and face the very thing that's been paralyzing them. And in the name and authority of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray that they would find you and see you in the storm and walk to the other side. Father, we thank you that the valley of the shadow of death is not our home. That we walk through the valley of the shadow of death and we will fear no evil. For your rod and your staff are with us. And Father, I speak this over the church. I bless them, I strengthen them. I pray in Jesus name for courage in every heart. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. God bless you guys. Thank you.
